ASA Swim School of the Year 2016

Penguins Swimming Lessons win ASA Swim School of the Year | ASA Aquatics Awards 2016

Penguins Swimming Teachers Monthly Lifesaving and First Aid Training

Water safety is at the heart of our ethos and every member of Penguins staff receives lifesaving training each month to ensure our skills stay up to date. These 2-hour sessions are led by Scott Winstanley, our fantastic Royal Lifesaving Society (RLSS) approved trainer from Training-2Save. Some members of the Penguins team have been attending lifesaving training for nearly 30 years!

Our training covers everything from emergency incidents to Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, use of the Automated External Defibrillator and First Aid. The photos here show our site-specific lifesaving and first aid training at Lancing College working as a team to support a swimmer who has a spinal injury in the water, April 2015.

Scott Winstanley says: ‘Penguins swim teachers are excellent at what they do. I am very impressed by the standard of the daily operation they deliver. Linette and her team are very dedicated to providing a safe environment for everyone involved. They are all competent in water safety, first aid and the use of the AED, which is excellent and something that we are very proud of here at Training-2save.’

All Penguins teachers are RLSS National Pool Lifeguard and National Rescue Test for Swimming Teachers qualified. We have now teamed up with Scott to offer the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification in October half term 2015 at Lancing College to anyone who can meet the criteria. Contact us for more details.

Penguins Underwater Explorers

Look out for that jellyfish!

In October, nearly 40 young swimmers donned snorkels and fins to explore a deep sea coral reef – right here in our pool! Penguins teamed up with the Sussex Wildlife Trust to transform the swimming pool into a marine wonderland, perfect for underwater adventures. Two groups of 18 swimmers, along with 4 instructors, went exploring the seabed, swimming around life-like models of coral, seaweed and ocean creatures. The children learnt how to snorkel and swim using fins, whilst playing games and discovering facts about our oceans. An amazing day – we are very grateful to our friends at the Sussex Wildlife Trust for bringing the pool to life for our young deep sea divers.

Undersea News

Underwater Exploring with Sussex Wildlife Trust, 29th October 2014

Penguin Swimming Lessons has teamed up with the Sussex Wildlife Trust to offer an exciting chance for 7-11 year-old swimmers to learn snorkelling skills in a rather unusual way. For the ‘Under Water Explorers’ on the morning 29 October, the pool will be transformed into a marine wonderland, filled with life-like models of plants and aquatic creatures.

news Achievers

Penguins Swimmer Nominated for Southern Water Swim Achievers of the Year 2013-14

We are extremely proud that Charlotte, 10, was nominated for the Southern Water Achiever of the Year Award. Charlotte was one of 25 swimmers chosen from 38,000. Charlotte has been swimming with Penguins since she was four years old. She worked her way swiftly through the ASA National Plan Stages and this year, for the first time, qualified for the Sussex County Championships, achieving one place off the final. Charlotte was presented with a medal and certificate by Duncan Goodhew. Her family and Linette went to watch the ceremony at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth.

News - RNLI gala

Annual Swimming Gala in aid of RNLI (Shoreham) Spring 2015

All Penguins swimmers, aged 4 – 17, have the opportunity to enter our annual swimming gala in aid of the Shoreham RNLI. Always the highlight of our year, there are events for every age group and special achiever awards for swimmers who show an excellent attitude and sportsmanship.

Pool re-opens

Pool re-opening, 4 August 2014 at Lancing College

The pool has been closed for a period whilst awaiting the delivery of a new air handling unit and this opportunity has been used to carry out some improvement works in the pool. A new ceiling has been installed, ventilation duct insulation replaced, the changing rooms have been redecorated and various other sundry works.
Penguins are looking forward to getting back to swimming and resuming classes as normal.

Classes Intensive

Summer Intensive Courses

We are running two 5 day intensive swimming courses during the summer holidays (LINK to course dates & fees). Classes are for children of all ages (from 4 years upwards) and abilities. They are a great, fun way for new beginners to start their independent lessons. Intensive courses are also a ‘top-up’ for confident swimmers and advanced standards.

ASA Helpers Workshop May 2014 Oak Grove College, Worthing

We organised this course for our older swimmers (13-16 years) to enable them to actively assist with learn to swim schemes or swimming clubs. The ASA qualification can also be used towards students’ Duke of Edinburgh Award volunteering section, and GCSE PE.
We had 11 attendees and the course consisted of 3 ½ hours theory plus 3 hours practical in the pool.  It was a very positive day. The students each had a beginner swimmer (of 4-5 years old) to work with in the pool.  Instructed by Gill, the children and their helpers really enjoyed the experience.

Masters CPR Session & Sea Swim

We organised a basic Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation session for our master swimmers at the Shoreham Lifeboat station on Tuesday 17th July, with our in house RLSS trainer.
Our Masters will also be meeting on Shoreham Beach at 8pm on 27 July for our first group sea swim. We’ll be joined by some kayakers, too, for our sea adventure, followed by curry on Friday 1 August
