Penguin Swimming Lessons has teamed up with the Sussex Wildlife Trust to offer an exciting chance for 7-11 year-old swimmers to learn snorkelling skills in a rather unusual way. For the ‘Under Water Explorers’ on the morning 29 October, the pool will be transformed into a marine wonderland, filled with life-like models of plants and aquatic creatures.
We are extremely proud that Charlotte, 10, was nominated for the Southern Water Achiever of the Year Award. Charlotte was one of 25 swimmers chosen from 38,000. Charlotte has been swimming with Penguins since she was four years old. She worked her way swiftly through the ASA National Plan Stages and this year, for the first time, qualified for the Sussex County Championships, achieving one place off the final. Charlotte was presented with a medal and certificate by Duncan Goodhew. Her family and Linette went to watch the ceremony at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth.
All Penguins swimmers, aged 4 – 17, have the opportunity to enter our annual swimming gala in aid of the Shoreham RNLI. Always the highlight of our year, there are events for every age group and special achiever awards for swimmers who show an excellent attitude and sportsmanship.
The pool has been closed for a period whilst awaiting the delivery of a new air handling unit and this opportunity has been used to carry out some improvement works in the pool. A new ceiling has been installed, ventilation duct insulation replaced, the changing rooms have been redecorated and various other sundry works.
Penguins are looking forward to getting back to swimming and resuming classes as normal.
We are running two 5 day intensive swimming courses during the summer holidays (LINK to course dates & fees). Classes are for children of all ages (from 4 years upwards) and abilities. They are a great, fun way for new beginners to start their independent lessons. Intensive courses are also a ‘top-up’ for confident swimmers and advanced standards.
We organised this course for our older swimmers (13-16 years) to enable them to actively assist with learn to swim schemes or swimming clubs. The ASA qualification can also be used towards students’ Duke of Edinburgh Award volunteering section, and GCSE PE.
We had 11 attendees and the course consisted of 3 ½ hours theory plus 3 hours practical in the pool. It was a very positive day. The students each had a beginner swimmer (of 4-5 years old) to work with in the pool. Instructed by Gill, the children and their helpers really enjoyed the experience.
We organised a basic Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation session for our master swimmers at the Shoreham Lifeboat station on Tuesday 17th July, with our in house RLSS trainer.
Our Masters will also be meeting on Shoreham Beach at 8pm on 27 July for our first group sea swim. We’ll be joined by some kayakers, too, for our sea adventure, followed by curry on Friday 1 August
We had a wonderful time with the joyful 4 and 5 year-olds of Annan Kindergarten in July, hosting their first ever swimming session and playing lots of confidence-building games and hunting for whales, jellyfish and sea horses in the heated, outdoor pool. The Kindergarten said: “Linette put a lot of effort into creating a lovely water adventure story for the children. Every child took part and really enjoyed it!”
